Born in Ciudad Juárez, Chito Banda comes from a Chicano family split between Mexico and the States. He keeps it real — shooting his people, his neighbourhood, his everyday cotorreo. His style’s pure “calle pero elegante,” mixing the rough with the refined.

What started with family photos turned into raw stories from the hood — full of heart, hustle, and the soul of Mexico’s streets. 

Chito kindly answered our questions in both English and Spanish to make sure his words came through without any mistranslation.

Can you tell us a little bit about your background and where you’re from?

 I was born in Ciudad Juarez, I come from a Chicano Family split between Mexico and US.

¿Puedes contarnos un poco sobre tu trayectoria y de dónde eres?

Nací en Ciudad Juárez, vengo de una familia Chicana dividida entre México y EU.

How did you first get into photography, and what drew you to it?

I first got into photography around 2015 when I started photographing my family. I really liked how the camera was my life’s witness.

¿Cómo empezaste en la fotografía y qué fue lo que te atrajo de ella?

Me empezó a interesar la fotografía en el 2015 cuando fotografiaba a mi familia, me encantaba que la cámara se convirtiera en el testigo de mi vida.

What inspires your work, and how would you describe your style in your own words?

I get inspired by being outside and seeing life happen, I would say “calle pero elegante” (‘street but make it fancy’).

¿Qué inspira tu trabajo y cómo describirías tu estilo con tus propias palabras?

Me inspiro saliendo a la calle y viendo la vida pasar, diría que mi estilo es “calle pero elegante”.

Does football play a role in your life or influence your work in any way?

I mostly relate it to passion in the hoods in Mexico, it's everywhere in my country.

¿El fútbol juega un papel en tu vida o influye en tu trabajo de alguna manera?

Mayormente lo relaciono con la pasión en los barrios de México, está por todos lados.

What inspired the concept behind the shoot? And do you have a favourite shot from the project?

Nothing was really planned, I just told my homies to meet me in Lagunilla, we drank some beers, smoked some joints and went from there. My favorite shot is Kiara laying down on the back of the truck.

¿Qué inspiró el concepto detrás de la sesión? ¿Tienes una foto favorita del proyecto?

Nada estaba planeado, solo le dije a mis compas que me vieran en la Lagunilla, nos chingamos unas chelas, nos fumamos unos porros y le dimos candela. Mi foto favorita es la de Kiara acostada en la caja de la troca.

Looking ahead, are there any projects or exhibitions you’re excited about? Where can people find your work?
